6 Day Congo Gorilla, Chimpanzee, Nyiragongo tour
This package is meant to have you fully experienced of the Great Apes in Volcano national park. It includes trekking the gorilla twice and an experience of chimps. You will also hike to Nyiragongo volcano for the great exploration of the most active volcano in Africa where you’ll encounter numerous wildlife along the trail to the mountain.

Detailed itinerary for the 6 days gorilla, chimp and Nyiragongo hike
Day 1: Pick up from Kigali
On arrival, you’ll be received by the driver guide and you’ll leave Kigali for Goma in DRC. The town that connects you to Goma is Gisenyi at the border of Rwanda, stopover at the border post- virunga tourism office for permits and proceed to Goma and Virunga national park. Check in at Mikeno lodge or Bukima tented camp, or at Kibumba tented camp, have lunch and relax.
Day 2: Gorilla trekking
Wake up early, have breakfast and the driver guide drives you to the trek starting point at Bukima ranger post. After getting the guidelines and meeting the ranger guide, get into the forest, trek till you spot the amazing primates, you will have an hour of interaction with them and get back to Bukima and be transferred to the lodge. Have lunch and relax.
Day 3: Second Gorilla trekking
This is our second trek to the forests of Virunga national park. You’ll wake up, have breakfast and proceed to the starting and enter the forest, follow the trails as led by the ranger guide till you spot the gorillas.

Day 4: Chimpanzee trekking/ habituation
The activity of visiting Chimps in Virunga national park is more less a habituation experience. You’ll wake up early, have breakfast and be get ready for the forest to see the chimps. You’ll set off at 6:00am to the area where the chimps have been spotted to have spent their night. After this thrilling experience, you’ll get back to your lodge and relax, have lunch and you may go for a nature walk or visit the Senkwekwe orphanage center later on in the evening.
Get back to the lodge, have dinner and prepare for hiking for the following day.
Day 5: Hiking to Nyiragongo volcano summit
After your early morning breakfast, you’ll be transferred to Kibati patrol post where the hike will start from. You’ll be led by a ranger guide through the 8km trail where you may encounter some animals like monkeys. Hiking to the top takes about 5-6 hours and you’ll rest at some designated points along the trail.
The most amazing part of this trip is when you watch the largest active lava lake in the world and spend a night at the rim of the crater in the Nyiragongo summit shelters.
Day 6: Descend to Kibati and connect to Kigali
After the night at Nyiragongo, you’ll wake up early for breakfast and set off back to Kibati, meet the river guide and set off for Kigali. Depending on the time of arrival at Kibati, you may have lunch in Virunga at the lodge or have it enroute.
