3 Days Mount Nyiragongo Hiking

Day 1: Kigali, Rwanda- Goma town

On arrival at Kigali International airport, the driver guide from Adventure in the wild safaris will receive and transfer you from Kigali, through Gisenyi town and connect to Goma town. Depending on your Preference, you may spend the night at Goma town or in Virunga national park accommodations.

Day 2: From the lodge to Kibati starting point and hike to Nyiragongo

The driver guide will pick you from your lodge and transfer you to Kibati where you’ll meet the local guide and porters and get guidelines before starting the hike. Remember to carry water and packed food for lunch. Hiking top the summit will take 5-6 hours and the night will be spent at Nyiragongo shelters where you’ll also have your dinner and breakfast the following morning. 

Day 3: Descend to Kibati and exit the park

You’ll wake in the morning, have breakfast and descend to Kibati where you’ll meet your driver guide and drive to Goma, connect to Gisenyi then to Kigali airport. If you arrive at Kigali early, you may pass by Kigali Memorial Genocide and find out more about the 1994 Rwanda genocide.

Nyiragongo Volcano Eruption

This was the last eruption that occurred after some of the previous ones that occurred in 1912, 1938, 1948 and1970s. It was on 17 Jan that the volcano emitted lava which quickly flowed to Goma town up to the shores of L. Kivu. It is said to have killed about 150 people, destroyed a lot of property in the town, and blocked part of the run way at Goma airstrip. It is very safe to hike and have a night at the volcano summit because the eruptions are monitored.

Tips for hiking Nyiragongo volcano

Hiking to the summit of the most active volcano is a worthwhile experience you’ll have in your entire life. Anyone would watch the red glow of the volcano from as far as Gisenyi town but hiking and viewing it from the summit is more thrilling. The trail from the starting point to the summit is about 8.5km.

You are required to prepare for the hike early with a booking of US$300, strong hiking boots, thick rain jacket, water, warm clothes and a torch if you plan to spend the night at the summit in Nyiragongo shelters.

Be at Kibati patrol post at 9:00am. This is the starting point for the hike where you’ll get guideline for the hike and set off for the hike at 10:00am. After starting the hike, it will take you about 5-6 hours to arrive at the summit and there you’ll view the magical red glow from the boiling magma. It is possible to hike to the top and descend in one day.

Porters are available at the starting point and these are used at your own expense. Utilize them if you have a lot of luggage.

The minimum age for hiking to Mount Nyiragongo is 12years. Anyone below the age 12 is not allowed to hike. You are required to be physically fit and well hydrated.

Mount Nyiragongo FactsMount nyiragongo is recorded to have erupted 34 times since 1882 and the last eruption took place in Jan 2002. Lava flew through Goma town and to the shores of Lake Kivu which threatened people in the surrounding areas of the limnic eruptions that would occur from the lake. The remains of 2002 eruption can still be viewed on a city tour around Goma.

The volcano has the largest lava lake in the world, 2 different cooled lava benches in the crater walls with a higher one at 3,175m and a lower one of 2,975m.
