Gorilla trekking permits are very important and it is a MUST before any trekking activity in Uganda, DRC and Rwanda. Most visitors prefer trekking gorillas in Uganda and Rwanda because they are more secure compared to DRC so you can purchase a trekking permit from Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) or from a local tour operator and from Rwanda Development Board (RDB).

Visitors should at least book the permits 2 months earlier before the actual trekking month and date especially when planning to travel during the high months of June, July, August, September, December and February when there is a stiff competition for the permits in Uganda and Rwanda.

How to acquire a gorilla trekking permit in Uganda

The easiest and quickest way of getting a gorilla trekking permit in Uganda is by going with a local operator. These local operators charge a fee of US$25-$60 per gorilla permit and they secure your lodging, transport, food and permits. Visitors with their own transport or can board a local bus to Bwindi can do the trekking by themselves as long as they do have a gorilla trekking permit.

The Uganda Wildlife Authority also gives out gorilla permits. You need to contact UWA’s reservation office by email to find out the feedback on your planned date of visiting Uganda or you can visit their office on Kiira road to confirm the trekking date.

Booking with the UWA should be done at least 4 months before travelling and each gorilla permit costs $600 throughout the year.
