Mgahinga Gorilla National Park
Mgahinga Gorilla National Park – This is the smallest but most interesting national park in Uganda covering a total area of 33sqkm. It is positioned in the southwestern extreme corner of Uganda, on the lowlands of the extinct Virunga volcanoes that are shared among Uganda, Rwanda and the DRC and each takes the responsibility to protect its park. Mgahinga gorilla national park is about 510km from Kampala city via Mbarara and it would take you 8 hours via Kabale and Kisoro town on road.
The park can also be reached by air from Entebbe airport to Kisoro and you are advised to make bookings for the fight.
Mgahinga national park was gazzeted in 1991 mainly to protect the endangered mountain gorillas. Besides gorillas, the park is also well known for the golden monkeys and the indigenous Batwa group of people. Entrance to the park requires a permit of US$40, US$30 and UGX20,000 for non foreign residents, foreign residents and east African citizens respectively, and these permits serve for only 24 hours.
