Uganda has got about 20 primate species including 14 diurnals and 6 nocturnal protected in different national parks, game reserves and sanctuaries making Uganda the hotspot of the best primate safaris. Uganda has got the highest concentration of primates in Africa With Kibale national park having the highest concentration of primates. The park has got 13 primate species that include the blue monkey, chimpanzees, black and white colobus, red tailed monkey, grey cheeked mangabey, l’hoest’s , olive baboons, the recently discovered dwarf galago.

Mountaing gorillas

These are the heavest ground dwelling apes with a life span of 35-40 years, agestation period of 257 days and a height of a bout 1.6meters and the weight of 210kilograms. these apes crib in the tropical rainforests and in Uganda they can be found at mgahinga gorilla national park and Bwindi impenetrable forest national park


They are sciebtificaly known as the pan troglodytes and they are also known as the common chimpanzee. Chimpanzees are the natives of the forest and savannahs weighing 40 – 70 kg (males) and 25 – 80kg (females) having a gestation period of eight months and the height of 120 – 150 cm.

In Uganda , chimpanzees can be accessed at kibale national park , queen Elizabeth national park in the kyambura gorge, murchision falls national park in budongo forest and semuliki national park.


Uganda’s monkeys species are known as the old world monkeys (cercopithecidae) and these include the golden monkey, black and white colobus monkey, de brazza’s monkey, red colobus monkey, potto, bushbaby, grey cheeked mangabey, l’hoest’s monkey, the red tailed monkey, the patas monkey, the vervet monkey , the blue monkey and the baboons.

The nocturnal primate species of Uganda include the bushbabies also known as the galagoes . they are small sized mammals commonly seen in the wooded habitants in the sub-saharan africa. The potto or perodicticus potto ,it’s the medium sized nocturnal primate specie found in forest interiors were it takes the nights foraging upside down from the tree branches.



Uganda has got the highest primate concentration in Africa having the habituated and non-habituated primate species.

Kibale national park is the hotspot of primate viewing in Uganda with 13 primate species from the kanyanchu chimpanzee tracking excursion in every morning and afternoon as the permit goes by 150$. You are also expecting to see other primates on you nature walks around the swamps of bigodi.
