A gorilla is the largest specie of primates. There are 2 types of gorillas namely the eastern gorillas and the western gorillas. The Eastern gorillas have two subspecies; mountain gorillas and eastern lowland gorillas and the Western gorillas also have two subspecies; western lowland gorillas and cross river gorillas. All gorillas live in groups also known as gorilla families. The group can have as many members as 30 but with only one leader which is known as the dominant silverback.

How heavy are silverback gorillas ? The Silverback gorilla weight is between 220 to 250 kilograms

The weight of gorillas depends on their sex. Among all the four gorilla types, the Eastern lowland gorillas are said to be the heaviest. An adult Eastern lowland male gorilla can weigh 220 to 250 kilograms while the female weighs about half of the weight of the males. Eastern lowland gorillas are found in the tropical rain forests of the DRC. The DRC has both types of the Eastern gorillas; eastern lowland gorillas and mountain gorillas.

Among all the types of gorillas, males are usually heavier than females. The strongest and largest gorilla ever recorded in the DRC weighed 219 kilograms. This gorilla was killed in 1938 as it was found shot dead near Lake Kivu in the DRC. However much the Eastern lowland gorillas have been observed and confirmed to be the heaviest and strongest gorillas, the heaviest gorilla ever recorded in the world was a western gorilla from Cameroon. It weighed 263 kilograms.

Adult mountain gorillas can weigh up to 220 kilograms while adult female mountain gorillas can weigh up to 160 kilograms.

A male Cross river gorilla weighs about 180 kilograms while an adult western lowland gorilla weighs about 170 kilograms.

Gorillas are giants with the upper body parts being broader and with more muscles than the lower body parts.

Gorillas are found only on the African continent. They live in tropical and sub-tropical forests but they are critically endangered because of reasons such as habitat loss, diseases such as Ebola and poaching among others. Mountain gorillas are the most endangered species, they are found in only three countries; Uganda, Rwanda and the DRC. They live on the mountainous areas in Bwindi Impenetrable forest national park and Mgahinga national park in Uganda, Volcanoes national park in Rwanda and Virunga national park.

Gorilla trekking is today the highlight for traveling to Uganda and Rwanda. The activity had not developed from in the DRC (in Virunga national park) because of civil unrest for a long time in the country. It is however picking up these days as it is now confirmed safe. There are 8 habituated groups in the park today and a gorilla trekking tour there can be combined with a hike to Nyiragongo volcano.

The Western lowland gorillas inhabit the tropical rainforests of Central African Republic, Cameroon, Equatorial Guinea and Congo while Cross river gorillas are found in Nigeria and Cameroon.
