2 days Chimpanzee trekking tour in Budongo Forest – Budongo forest in Murchison falls national park is currently the largest natural forest in the country. This tour provides a full package to track chimpanzees and have a nature walk in the thick Budongo forest. It is located about 190km form Kampala driving to the North West direction. The forest harbors 24 species of animals with 9 primate types alongside, 465 species of trees, 359 species of birds, 289 species of butterflies and 130 species of moths. Budongo forest is well known for the big number of mahogany trees and an amazing population of chimpanzees of about 600-700. Due to the diversity of biological species in their natural habitat, two eco-tourism sites; Kaniyo Padidi and Busingiro were put to enhance tourism activities. These sites have many trailheads that penetrate into the forest where many other animals including monkeys and birds apart from chimpanzees are expected. It doesn’t require a lot of fitness to trek the chimpanzees since the area is abit flat.

Detailed programme for 2 days Chimpanzee trekking tour in Budongo Forest

Day 1: Travel from Kampala to Budongo forest- Murchison Falls national park

The driver guide will pick you from your residence after your breakfast so that you will start travelling from Kampala by 8:00am to head to Murchison falls National Park. You may briefly stop at Luweero to purchase fruits and proceed with the journey through Nakasongola to Masindi where you’ll have your lunch and then continue to the park.

You may receive a warm welcome from baboons as you get close to the park headquarters where you’ll receive a permit to the park and then check in at Budongo Eco lodge where to spend the night prior to the day ahead for chimp tracking. A pleasant dinner in the wild will be served in the evening before you sleep.

Day 2: Chimp tracking and travelling back to Kampala

After an early breakfast at the hotel, you start the activity with a briefing at Kaniyo Padidi before penetrating into the thick forest on a search for the great forest citizens.

You may choose to have the habituation experience which gives an opportunity to spend more time with these primates and get involved in feeding them as you learn much about their behaviors. This activity may last up to around mid-day and then leave the park to Masindi town for lunch. After lunch, you drive back to Kampala so that you arrive before dusk.
